The Isle of Wight is centrally located just off the south coast
of England by a short ferry journey from the main land. A Hi-speed ferry service operates between Cowes and Southampton giving
fast access to Southampton airport, railway station and motorway links to the rest of the UK.
The Isle of Wight is
the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing break, at any time of year. It is a stunning island boasting unspoilt scenery and a
wealth of fascinating attractions. For the energetic, there are plenty of sports facilities, including windsurfing, sailing
and paragliding. And for those who prefer to unwind and explore, there's so much to discover.
There is a wide range
of recreational facilities including some great theme parks and other locations for a very active day out.
With over
half of the Isle of Wight recognised as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, and 30 miles of ‘Heritage Coast’ – the island
is the perfect location for stepping back, relaxing and getting closer to nature. The Island hosts a pub (several with open
log fires) for every square mile, A superb Farmers Market serving homemade fare, and of course stunning coastlines.
Wherever
you go on the Island you will see evidence of a fascinating past, with Medieval castles, historic houses and exhibitions which
depict life in a bygone age. Magnificent Osborne House, given to the nation by King Edward VII, is just one of over 30 history
and heritage attractions.
The beaches and scenery will take your breath away. Most parts of the Island can be reached
by a network of over 500 miles of footpaths, bridle ways and cycle routes, for which the Isle of Wight has achieved national
recognition by the Countryside Commission. Great walking can be combined with fantastic cycling along unspoilt cycle tracks,
which crisscross the island.
Cowes on the Isle of Wight lies at the heart of the sailing scene on the south coast of
the UK. The Solent, the broad stretch of sheltered water between the Island and the mainland, is the country's busiest waterway
with cruise liners like the QE2, Queen Mary, Oriana, Arcadia, Aurora, and Saga Princess regularly coming into Southampton
as their homeport. The main deep channel passes along the front of Cowes at Prince Consort buoy and the Parade at Cowes provides
a wonderful ship spotters vantage point for the many commercial container ships and oil tankers which pass on their way to
Southampton.
Cowes has long been regarded as the premier yachting centre in Britain. For almost 175 years Cowes has
been host to the organisers of major yachting events, as well as being a busy trading port and shipbuilding centre, becoming
one of the most fashionable resorts in the country. It is predominantly Victorian in style and the main shopping areas and
side streets contain some elegant buildings both pre and post that era. Visitors can be lost for hours wandering up the picturesque
streets to the grounds of Northwood House and park. Whilst a visit to the Library and Maritime Museum reveals the greatest
number of maritime books to be found anywhere.
